The spring wild flowers are a phenomenon that never ceases to amaze and delight, even for those who live in what is considered South Africa's "outback" – Namaqualand.

Did you know? Because the flowers follow the sun, the best way to make sure that you see them is to drive backwards, or with the sun. Drive as far north as you can and make your way back slowly to Cape Town.

What at first glance appears to be a wilderness of semi-desert - arid, dusty plains that stretch before one, dramatic mountains in the background, with little by way of colour or animation - is suddenly transformed, as if by a painter with a manic palette, into a pageant of flowers.

10h00: Depart Cape Town and travel North up the West Coast  past Langebaan and Saldanha Bay. We will make a stop for lunch on the way. Climb over the Piketberg mountains to Citrusdal where we make a stop. After this continue along the flower areas where predominantly yellow and white flowers can be seen. Pass Clan William where we will stop on the way back. Head for the sea and Lamberts Bay on the coast. Late afternoon visit Bird Island after checking in at the Marine Hotel Lamberts Bay. Dinner and overnight. (D)

3 Sept. This morning we take a drive to Van Rhynsdorp while we search for flowers and visit the succulent nursery at Van Rhynsdorp where dozens of little plants are grown from all over Namaqualand. Return to Lamberts Bay by lunchtime and go straight to Muisbosskerm where an amazing beach lunch awaits you with fresh bread coming out of the ovens on the beach and 16 different types of fish are cooked on the braai in front of you. This is a loooong lunch. After lunch we will visit some of the little bays in the flowers areas. Return to Lamberts Bay late afternoon. Dinner is included tonight if you can still manage to eat anything. Overnight.  (B,L,D)

4 Sept. Today we find flowers as we head for Clan William. Here we visit Ramskop Nature Garden with flowers from all over Namaqualand and where you might be able to buy seeds to bring home and plant in your garden at home. Enjoy walking through this paradise of flowers. After this visit we visit the Velskoen factory and then the Rooibos tea shop where you can buy local Rooibos tea products. We will stop for lunch. After lunch we head into the Cedarberg mountains where we marvel at the different shapes carved out of the rock by wind and rain. We visit Louis Leipoldt’s grave in the mountains where he asked to be buried. Late afternoon we leave from Clan William and make our way to Citrusdal for overnight at the Cedarberg Hotel.  Overnight with dinner. (B,D)

5 Sept.  Today is another flower day as we head for the magnificent West Coast National Park that is a feast for the eyes. We make our way slowly down the West coast back to Cape Town
